It is no fluke that Spicer Thoroughbreds has become one of the most respected bloodstock businesses in Australia; it is a result that Managing Director Brad Spicer had always planned to achieve.
A plumber by trade, Brad had always been fascinated by the thoroughbred but knew that a career transition would take careful planning and dedication.
Before making the leap, Brad spent countless mornings at track work in the Flemington trainer’s tower working alongside Leon Corstens, former right-hand man of the iconic trainer Bart Cummings. He spent eight years working alongside legendary yearling buyer George Smith at yearling sales and soaked up as much information as he could, honing his eye and refining his own selection criteria.
Since 2005, Brad’s reputation as a yearling buyer has grown each season thanks to Group 1 winners Starspangledbanner, an international champion sprinter and successful stallion, 1000 Guineas winner Commanding Jewel, Derby winner Zabeelionaire, Mackinnon Stakes winner Awesome Rock, and 2018 Victoria Derby winner Extra Brut, as well as countless Group and Listed performers and metropolitan winners.
Established by Director Brad Spicer in 2005, Spicer Thoroughbreds began life as a yearling syndication business but has transitioned into something much greater. Discovering Group 1 success stories Starspangledbanner, Commanding Jewel, Zabeelionaire, Awesome Rock, Extra Brut and comeback champion Kings Will Dream, we are now also very proud to service a raft of private clients, breeders and the sophisticated owner in an exciting sport.
With significant international links, the business has an exceptional record of recruiting international talent with Group 1 winner Kings Will Dream an example of the quality that Brad and his team have sourced for clients.
“When I started this business, I wanted to create a team mentality for our staff and our clients, and I can proudly say we’ve done that. We strive for elite results and we work with great people, I can’t think of a better way to enjoy racing,” Brad Spicer.
We’d love to discuss your racing and breeding dreams with you. Contact Brad or Mick and arrange to catch up and talk horses.
